ecoRd A9 The Republic, Columbus, Wednesday, August 23, 2017 Averil Lynn Axsom NOBLESVILLE Averil Lynn Axsom, 62, of Noblesville and formerly of Columbus, died on Sunday, August 20, 2017, at Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis. Mr. Axsom was a United States Army Veteran. He had retired from Dorel Juvenile Group and enjoyed playing cards.

The funeral service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Barkes, Weaver, Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association. Family and friends may call from 2:30 p.m. to time of service Thursday at the funeral home.

Military honors will be conducted by Bartholomew County Honor Guard at the funeral home. In keeping with Mr. wishes, cremation is planned following services. Averil was born on October 1, 1954, in Columbus, the son of Opal and Ernestine Vivian McHargue Axsom.

On November 7, 2012, he married Julie E. Sierra. Survivors include his wife, Julie E. Axsom of Noblesville; children, Paul Axsom of Louisville and Ariel Axsom of Columbus; stepchildren, Stephania Pfeiffer and Andres Trujillo of Noblesville; grandson, Trendon Axsom of Louisville; siblings, Ruth (Ron) Moffatt of Columbus, Opal (Jerry) Bebout of North Vernon, Betty Goddard of Greenwood, Valerie Jost of Columbus, Gerald Axsom of North Vernon, Michael Axsom of Columbus and Roger Axsom of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, John Axsom and Linnie Axsom.

Robert Louis Burkhart COLUMBUS Robert Louis Burkhart, 76, of Columbus, died unexpectedly at 6:17 a.m. Saturday, August 19, 2017, at his residence. Bob retired from Cummins Engine Company after 40 years of service. He loved the outdoors and antiques. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports.

Bob was a lifetime member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church with Father Clem Davis officiating.

Friends and family may call from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Thursday at Barkes, Weaver Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana, St.

Bob was born on February 22, 1941, to the late John Raymond and Hilda Thrine Burkhart in Greensburg, IN. On October 7, 1967, he married Betty Striecker at St.

Catholic Church in Greensburg. Survivors include his wife, Betty; children; James Burkhart, Julie (Rick) Risley, Jeff Burkhart, all of Columbus, and Justin Burkhart of Portland, OR; grandchildren, Yates Burkhart, Emma Risley, Claire Risley and Adeline Risley; siblings, Richard Burkhart, Stella Vanderpohl, Russell (Betty) Burkhart, Ralph Burkhart, Paul (Patty) Burkhart, Thelma (Don) Griewe, Rita (Larry) Dickman, Margie (Bill) Eldridge, all of Greensburg; and many nieces, nephews, great- nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews. Russell J. Dean COLUMBUS Russell J. Dean, 61, of Nashville, died at 11:40 a.m.

Friday, August 18, 2017, at Willow Crossing Health and Rehabilitation Center in Columbus. Mr. Dean worked at Brown County State Park and was a National Guard veteran. Rusty was a member of the volunteer fire department and paramedics in Nashville. He was known as and the clown.

Mr. Dean enjoyed crafts, especially cross- stitching, and playing card games. In his younger days, he played roller hockey with the team from Southland Skating Rink. Rusty would also cook for local fish fries in Nashville. The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m.

Friday at Barkes, Weaver Glick Funeral Home, (4205 Jonathan Moore Pike, Columbus, IN, 47201) with Ryan Smith officiating. Family and friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service Friday, August 25, 2017, at the funeral home. Following his wishes, cremation will take place after the service. Military honors will be presented by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.

Mr. Dean was born on October 28, 1955, to the late John and Loretta Hacker Dean in Indianapolis, IN. On May 6, 1996, he married Leda VanArsdale.

Survivors include his wife, Leda; children, Brittany (Darren Petrey) Lewis, Tessa Dean, Danielle (Bobby) Goodin, all of Brown County; his mother, Loretta Hawkins of Ellettsville, IN; brothers, Brad (Cindy Kelly) Hawkins of Columbus, Brian (DeeAnna) Hawkins of Burksville, KY, John Dean of Colorado; sisters, Ginger (Andy) Hernandez of Ventura, CA, Melanie Dean of Moorseville, IN, Lynette St. John, Cheri; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and several cousins. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Jacob Dean; sister, Gay Dean; and stepfather, Charles Hawkins. Paul N. Dinkins COLUMBUS Paul Newton Dinkins passed away on August 21, 2017, under the care of Our Hospice of South Central Indiana at Four Seasons Health Center.

Paul was born December 25, 1919, in Columbus, Indiana, and was the son of Chester Newton and Mary (Schulz) Dinkins. Paul graduated from Columbus High School in 1938. He married Dotty L. Dinkins on October 10, 1942. He was employed at Irwin Union Bank and Trust Company from 1938 until 1985.

He held positions of President and Director from 1964 to 1975 and Chairman and Director from 1975 to 1977. He retired in 1985 after serving as Consultant and Director for 8 years. Paul served in the United States Navy from 1941 to 1945 at Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Chicago and in the South Pacific. Paul was President of Indiana Bankers Association 1972-1973 and served on the Advisory Council of the American Bankers Association. He was on the Columbus City Council 1959-1963 and the Columbus City Planning Commission 1959- 1963.

He was a trustee of the Columbus Redevelopment Commission and on the Advisory Board of Columbus IUPUI. He was on the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce where he served as Treasurer in 1979. He was a founding member of Columbus Growth where he served as President. He was a founding member of the Columbus Economic Development Commission, serving as its Chairman, and was a founding member of the William R. Laws Foundation.

He served as Campaign Chairman for United Way and also for the Red Cross. He was a life member of the Robert Morris Association and President of Kiwanis in 1959. Paul was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church where he was Lay Delegate to the South Indiana Methodist Conference in 1981 and 1996. He was a member of the South Indiana Conference Council of Finance and Administration. Paul was proud of his family and his community and enjoyed traveling.

He and Dotty made several trips to Europe where he continued his hobby of genealogy. He especially enjoyed family gatherings at Day and Christmas. Paul is survived by Dotty, his wife of 75 years, and sons, Doug (Sharen Clark) Dinkins of Holland, MI, Greg (Maryann Berkowski) Dinkins of Columbus, IN, and Philip (Ed Lally) Dinkins of St Petersburg, FL; grandson, Scott (Teresa) Dinkins of Wabash, IN; granddaughter, Kim (Tim) Ballew of Houston, TX; and great-grandchildren, Andrew, Alex and Addison Dinkins and Zackary Ballew. Paul was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Thelma Nolting and Ruth Harrison. Arrangements for a memorial service at Four Seasons Chapel are pending.

on Monday, August 21, 2017, at Morning Breeze Health Care Campus. He was born on September 29, 1934, in Brown County, the son of Theodore Alice (Coffman) King. He was raised in Brown and Bartholomew Counties and was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Batesville, Indiana. He enjoyed writing music and playing bluegrass and country music. Survivors include his daughters, Clifsonja A.

Thompson of Campbellsburg, Indiana, Tyronna R. King of Sandy, Utah, Jacqueline Y. Kendall and Tony J. King, both of Salem, Indiana, and Amanda Newland of Fremont, Indiana; his sons, Pernell King of Greensburg, Indiana, Hank King of Salem, Indiana, and Merrill T. King of Columbus, Indiana; 16 grandchildren; 23 great- grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Orville E. King; and sister, Betty A. Large. Funeral services will be conducted at noon on Friday, August 25, 2017, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints at 430 Hayden Pike, North Vernon, Indiana, with Bishop Robert Phaneuf officiating. Burial will follow at Garland Brook Cemetery.

A time of visitation will be held on Friday, August 25, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the general missionary fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Bass Gasper Funeral Home at Westport has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Online condolences can be sent to the family at www.bassgasper.com Phyllis Larrison INDIANAPOLIS Phyllis Larrison passed on August 12, 2017, and went to be with her parents and two of her children. She was born Phyllis June Fulp to Norton Perry Fulp and Mildred Romine Fulp on March 24, 1936, in Columbus, Indiana, and was raised there with her sister Cynthia Diana. The family attended the First Baptist Church in Columbus. Phyllis married Omer Ray Larrison in October 1956 and they had five children between 1958 and 1968. Phyllis worked in the home for several years while the children were young.

She ultimately retired from the accounting department of Inland Container Corporation. Phyllis was caregiver to her parents before they both passed. In more recent years, Phyllis helped a number of friends who had health and mobility issues. She is survived by her younger sister, Cynthia Diana (Curt) McCreary; her daughters, Michele (Gene) Gardner, Roxanne Larrison, and Lisa Larrison Wagenfuehr; grandchildren, Melissa (Shane) Davis, Ashley Nicole Gardner, Amber (Jason) Jackson, Christopher Ray Larrison, and Jacob Norton Larrison; great-grandchildren, Ryan Michael Davis, Liam Scott Davis, and Owen Matthew Jackson; nieces, Sherri Lyn Thompson, Tamara Diane (Jim) Tucker, Robin Louise (Chris) Quagliesi, Candyce June (Trey) Luken, and Debbi Ann (Ryan) Kelly; nephew, Curtis J. McCreary; first cousins, Robert Fulp (Barbara), Karen Weesner, Jolinda Kinney, Keith Fulp, Kenny Bryant (Linda); former daughter- in-law, Rebecca (Jeremy) Lunsford.

She also held a special place in her heart for her good friend, Wilbur Shortridge. Phyllis lost one child, Cathleen Nicole, 3 and lost another child, Scott Norton Larrison, at 34. She was also predeceased by her infant sister Mary Carol Fulp; her parents, Norton Perry Fulp and Mildred Romine Fulp; uncle, Robert Fulp (Christine); aunts, Nellie Haislup (Gerald), Florence Stapp (John), and Helen Gary (Ed); former husband, Omer Larrison; and a number of other close relatives and friends. Phyllis was very sociable. She loved people and had a talent for numbers and financial matters.

During her life she volunteered for the Little Red Door. Phyllis taught classes at Marian College for students with dyslexia while her son, Scott, attended class taught by another parent. She was also a supporter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the Association, the Arthritis Foundation, and the American Lung Association. We are grateful she is now at peace. A remembrance with family and friends will be held on Saturday, August 26, 2017, beginning at 11 a.m.

followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m. at the Hathaway-Myers Chapel, 1022 Pearl Street, in Columbus, Indiana. A private burial for family will follow at Garland Brook Cemetery. com. Hathaway-Myers Chapel is serving the Larrison family. Betty Jean Penisten COLUMBUS Betty Jean Penisten, 96, of Columbus, died 4:57 a.m. Friday August 18, 2017, at Keepsake Village of Columbus. Betty was born in Columbus October 30, 1920, the daughter of Otha Victor and Otice Eurlene Glick Larkin.

She married Wilbur Steinkamp in August of 1943; he preceded her in death in September of 1944. She married Paul E. Penisten March 28, 1948; he preceded her in death February 8, 1992. She was a former employee of Cummins Engine Company, Office of Bartholomew County School System, First Christian Church office and Simmen-Penisten Hardware Store. She was a member of First Christian Church and Phi Beta Psi Sorority.

She is survived by sons, Dennis Penisten of Littleton, Colorado, and Douglas (Alphie) Penisten of Tahlequah, Oklahoma; 2 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. She was preceded by her parents; 3 sons, Gregory, Brian and Larry Penisten; and her husbands. Funeral will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday Chapel on Pearl Street with D.J. Butcher officiating.
