Iud. Dr. J. C. McMillan was at Indiana polis last week, representing the Masonic lodge of this place.

Miss Irma Fitch, who formerly taught school here, visited in the fam ily of M. M. Hamilton last week. H. J.

Zollman has a gravel stone walk in front of his new business house on Main street. Clark Dixon did the work. A. Lnedtke, stone contractor, placed monuments at the graves of Mrs. D.

I. Peck, Mrs. Will "Sullivan and James Critchlow recently. Mrs. 7ohn Holmes, who has been visiting frinds and relatives in Washington couuty the past week, returned home last Saturday.

Misses Mabel and Blanche Alter, who have been attending to S. I. N. college at Mitchell, returned home last Friday. They speak well of the school.

Henderlider started for Den ver, last Monday, where he ex pects to follow civil engineering with nis nncie, j. w. xacunne, who -is an ex-superintendent of Jackson connty, and who is now State Engineer of Colorado. Quite a large crowd of people were in attendance at the strawberry and ice cream festival Saturday niuht. We understand that the receipts were fair, considering the number of people who were there.

Lauster, of Indianapolis, visited friends here over Sunday. Born, to Cally Bottorff and wife, Saturday, May a boy. Miss Hazel Prnden is visiting rela tives and friends at Seymonr. Misses Bertha Vannov and Eva Rider, of Crothersville, visited friends here last week. A good crowd was out Sunday night to hear Miss Wolfe's interesting ac- count of hospital work.

Quite a number from here attended decoration services at the Robertson cemetery last Sunday. Captains Vance and Applewhite delivered -excellent addresses to a large crowd. Captain Vance thinks it would be better to observe memorial services on the day chosen for that purpose and not nse the Sabbath. A plea for lack of time during the week is a poor excuse. If we rightly honor and love the dead, a hours spent in their memory would not be missed.

America of to-day is too busy, and we are none the better for it Let us try Capt Vance's plan next year and see If we do not feel better for having made a small sacri fice in memory of the dead. It HORSE STOLEN. I Thursday evening, about 9 o'clock a horse was stolen from G. W. Hays barn and ridden to Freetown, where the thief stole a buggy and set of harness from John Will Brown, and then drove off via Kurt and iauinee jfor the northern part of thsstate. The theft was discovert erly Friday morning, and telegrams were sent north all along the road to watch for jthe thief and horse.

We copy the following from Saturday's Cincinnati Enquirer concerning his capture. I "Franklin. May 26 Mr. Harris to-day made a deal with a stranger; for a horse and baggy, at suo. lie aaaea for reference and the stranger, who rave his name as J.

H. Smith, Wis ameared. bat was captured in a barn after an exciting chase. He is mar ried and has two children. The horse was stolen froia Geo.

The thief is a stranger here is the opinion of fine authorities who have hini in charge that he is a professional croott aua.nas been in trouble before. At the time of bin arrest he had in his Dossessiqn a 38 calibre revolver, a razor, day book. about 26 and several photographs, I one of which he tore into- pieces, supposed to have been the picture of his wife. other pictures of two of his child ren. He cried at the mention of tbem When Otis Hays went up the man was given a preliminary bearing and plead guilty.

The sheriff gave the prisoner over to the charge of Otis, who intend ied brinirintf him to this county, but just as they-were leaving the jail, the prosecnting attorney objected to the removal of the prisoner from that county. Chas. Hutchinson and Mrs. H. L. Hamilton.

Both are convalescent, Born, to George Stogstill and wife. May 25th, 1899. a girl to Painter El-kins and wife. May 23rd, a boy. There were sixteen of the old soldiers at the memorial exercise Sunday.

Rev, Tieinau preached an interesting sermon. On the second Sunday in June, the funeral of Thos: Brown, deceased, will he preached here at 10:30 o'clock, a. Come with your baskets well filled and stay all day. Knrtz will celebrate the Fonrth of July in grand style this year. Let everybody make their arrangements to attend the big 4th here.

Large crowds are always in attendance on aach occasions. Rev. Tieinan, pastor of the U. B. church at Freetown, preached a very able memorial sermon to a large audi ence here last Sunday morning.

The sermon received the approbation of all, who heard' him. His theme was 'Love." Among the old soldiers, present at we recognized 4 Dr. Richards, and Messrs. Thompson, Smith. Stogdell and Hanners, from Clear Spring, and Eli Bowers, of Freetown.

We welcome you to our midst Bill McMahan, who is track walker. on me x. k. k. tnrougn the Alexander hill, has quite an experience he relates to the boys when he returns of evenings.

He claims to have fifty pet ground-hogs which he trains daily for show, while he is taking rest between trains. He has one that is smarter than the. rest, and Bill expects to get a Captain's position for him when the next regiment goes to Manilla. He claims that the said "summer hog" is the exact thing to invade the jungle and cause the naked Philippiuos to re-. treat in consternation.

Of course. Bill intends to have a full, company of hogs' and will likely get a government appointment as aid-de-camp General issimo or some other big office which we, poor, weak mortals are unable to understand. He also has some biir snakes, one, of which, stood on it's hind feet and removed the glass in snlator f-ioin the telegraph pole for a shaving mug and is now hunting for a briar schthe for a razor. We predict a bright future for Bill and the snakes, ground-hogs, oppossums and other varmits living on the fastness of the hills. If anything else of interest occurs to Bill and the snakes, we will wire the Banner by the first barbed wire fence we can.

D. Payne, last week. He reports his father, Andy Dodds, as being in very poor health. A Mr. who has been visit ing Andy Loudermilk for several days, has been very sick for several days.

He was taken to his home near Wed dleville last Sunday. Work is being pnshed on the gravel roads as rapidly as 'possible. Teams are somewhat scarce just now, but, part of the roads will be graded and ready to receive gravel in; another week. Prof. Browning spying term of school closed last Friday.

A good' number of teachers attended the term, most of whom, took the examination for teachers license at Brownstown, Saturday, Waskom Warblings. Misses Ida and Mattie TSmpson went to Vallonia, Saturday, i O. W. Tuell was a business visitor at Brownstown, Saturday. Attend the Children Day exercises at Vallonia, Sunday night, June 4th.

Wells' saw mill company delivered several thousand feet of lumber at Seymour last week. Miss Maggie ElkinS, of Maumee, visited in the family of Ben Fleetwood several days last week. Several of the teachers from here attended the examinations at Browns-town and Seymonr, Saturday. Gravel hauling is being pushed with vigor. The "Panhandle" and "Van-dalia" will soon be completed.

There are prospects for a very large wheat harvest and we are expecting it to come mnrb earlier than usual. Prof. D. W.WhitP. who has been at tending college at Danville, returned home Friday, much benefited by the term.

He speaks of going back for the summer term. This country has been over mn by life insurance agents for the past two weeks. We have heard of but one pol icy being written, that of trustee E. R. White for "What has become qf the Hummer, Is the question nsiced by nearly every one in this community.

The 4th annual reunion of the de scendants Mose Fanbion, will be held near Heltpnville, Saturday, Wilbern Owens, wife and daughter, of Heltonville, visited relatives here and attended memorial services here last Sunday.

Elder Thos. Jones regular appoint ment at the Christian Chapel next Saturday night and Lord's Day. All are cordially invited. The memorial services here last Sun day was largely attended. Rev.

Perkins, of Trinidad, Col was called ere on account of his father's sickness. Hostilities broke out in the east end last wnek. A couple of youngsters en gaged in a hand-to-hand scrimmage and girls and boys took sides. Interest runs high here in regard to the stamping of gravel road tickets. Some claim that they require a revenue stamp while some claim they do not.

wWe understand that Charley has purchased the David McKain farm and intends to stock it with sheep. repairs on our flourins mill is progressing and no doubt will be com pleted in time fof the new wheat. Mr. Walter has secured the services of Fred Clark, as miller, and this is a guarantee that we will have a good mill. Freetown will celebrate the fourth of July this year in greater style than ever before.

We have established a custom nere ot celebrating one year and eiving up to other places the next. As th's is our "time at bat" we mean to "knock a borne run." The horse thief, who stole George Hays' horse, helped hiJqjsif't)0J, Brown bnggy and harness as he went through here. He was met below town by Andy Harbaugh. H. Fiudley to this place and will close them out in the next few weeks. W. H. Bowman has again resumed his work at the mill, after being shut down about four weeks to do up the farm work.

He put in 100 acres of corn. Prof. Hall sold his household effects Monday at public auction and will leave for Bernie, in a few days, where he has a position as principal of the schools, Our normal closed last Friday. The day was devoted to. regular exercises until after recess, which was given to merriment and a general good time.
