Today's Funeral Service Paul Johnson 2 p.m. Myers Funeral Service, Reed Jewell Chapel, Columbus Sunday's Funeral Services None scheduled Monday's Funeral Services Mary Lee Cull Sept. 30, 1924 March 11, 2004 Mary Lee Cull, 79, North Vernon, died Thursday, March 11, 2004, at St. Vincent Jennings Hospital, North Vernon.

Cull was a former reporter and photographer in Jennings County for the Cincinnati Post and Louisville Courier-Journal newspapers and also was a former reporter and photographer for the North Vernon Plain Dealer and Sun newspapers in North Vernon. She was the first female reserve officer in Jennings County, serving from 1979 to 1983, and also was vice president of Vernon Manufacturing Vernon, from 1952 to 1957. She was a former employee of Eastern Airlines and Burdine's, both in Florida. She was a member of Psi Iota Xi Sorority and St. Mary's Catholic Church.

She was a former member of Child Abuse Clinic and belonged to the Jennings County unit of the American Red Cross. She was a member of the National Federation of Press Women, was a cofounder and former president of Help Line was a member of the Women's Press Club of Indiana, from whom she received a firstplace award for journalism None scheduled in 1973 and also received the Kate Milner Rabb Award for outstanding journalistic work, the highest award from the Women's Press Club. She was a member of the National Press Photographers Association and Indiana News Photographers Association. She attended Vernon Elementary School, North Vernon High School, Stephens College, Ringling School of Arts, Tampa, and Terry School of Art, Miami. She enjoyed flying.

Born Sept. 30, 1924, in Jennings County, she was a daughter of 0.M. Cull and Edna Smith Cull, who preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Margaret Cull. The Rev.

Stephen Donahue and the Rev. Walter Glover will conduct funeral services at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, North Vernon, with burial at Vernon Cemetery. No visitation is planned.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church or to St. Vincent Jennings Hospital, both of North Vernon. Dove-Sharp Rudicel Funeral Home, North Vernon, handled arrangements. Walter Melvin Newkirk 11, 1914 March 12, 2004 Walter Melvin Newkirk, 89, Seymour, died at 7:55 a.m.

Friday, March 12, 2004, at Covered Bridge Health Campus. Mr. Newkirk was a member of First Church Newkirk of the Nazarene, Seymour. He was a former employee at Arvin, Columbus, and also worked as county surveyor. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and a former member of the Eagles Club.

Born Aug. 11, 1914, at Seymour, he was a son of Arthur and Sophie Newkirk, who preceded him in death. He married Pearl Lane on Nov. 5, 1937, at Seymour, and she preceded him in death. He is survived by a daughter, Barbara Von Hoene, Seymour; three sons, Jack (Mary) Newkirk and Donald (Charlene) Newkirk, both of Seymour, and Dennis (Ellen) Newkirk, Columbus; 13 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Newkirk, and three brothers, Chester, Ward and Clyde Newkirk. The Rev. Rosa Harris will conduct funeral services at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Voss and Sons Funeral Service, Voss Chapel, Seymour, with burial at Riverview Cemetery, Seymour. Friends may call from 4 p.m.

to 8 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. until time of service Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. Obituary policy The Tribune accepts obituaries from people in our readership area or with friends and family here.

Here's a look at the agenda: Agenda item: Property tax statements Discussion points: Treasurer Traci J. Sweeney told council that property tax bills for 2003 would be printed March 16-17 and mailed to taxpayers shortly after that time. Property tax owners will have until April 20 to pay those bills. She added her office received many advance tax payments last year, but lower tax rates stemming from higher reassessment means that many property taxpayers over paid last year and her office will have to write refund checks. Sweeney also said property tax bills for this year will not be mailed until sometime this summer.

Vote: No vote (information item only) Agenda item: Jackson County Visitor Center Discussion points: Curt Kovener, president of the center's board, asked council to approve an additional appropriation of $2,500 to move telephone lines and electrical service from the center's office at 357 Tanger Blvd. to 306 Tanger Blvd. Vote: 6-0 Effect: The center will move to 306 Tanger which Kovener said would provide more space for the center. Agenda item: Jackson County Visitor Center plans Discussion points: Kovener introduced new center Director Tina Stark and asked councilmen for their support for the idea of the center paying $30,000 over a 20-year period to Seymour to use the old train depot for its office, when renovation of the depot is complete. Kovener said the renovation was not scheduled to begin until September or October.

Vote: No vote (information items only). Councilman, however, did state their intent to fund the $30,000 payment to the city for the lease of the depot. Agenda item: Bad check program Discussion points: Richard Benton, who is director of the Jackson County prosecutor's bad check program, asked council members to approve an additional appropriation of $990.20 for program operations. Benton said that since the program began Sept. 15 it has been able to collect $22,521.93 from bad checks written to county businesses.

Vote: 6-0 Effect: Benton will be able to pay for office supplies for the program. Agenda item: Salt and cinders Discussion points: The county. highway department sought a $10,000 additional appropriation to pay for salt and cinders used on county roads. Vote: 6-0 Effect: The salt and cinders will be purchased. Agenda item: Jail Discussion points: Sheriff Jerry Hounshel said he recently met with the companies involved in construction of the jail four years ago to discuss the possible cause of electrolysis that is damaging water lines.

Hounshel said the electrical contractor, Majestic Electric, North Vernon, has agreed to look at and correct any problems found with electrical service in the building. Man convicted of murder LAWRENCEBURG (AP) A man who was a fugitive on murder charges for six months before a story about him was shown on "America's Most Wanted" has been convicted of killing his exwife. A Dearborn Circuit Court jury found Roger Holbrook guilty Thursday of murder following an eight-day trial, prosecutors said. Holbrook was charged with shooting 52-year-old Barbara Holbrook eight times at her home in the southeastern Indiana county in November 2002.

found in Byrdstown, because of a tip called in after a May 2003 episode of the television show. The Pickett County, Sheriff's Department said Holbrook told the arresting officers he had been living in the area about 100 miles northeast of Nashville, Tenn. for four months and had seen himself on the TV program. Barbara Holbrook had obtained a protective order against her ex-husband about a month before she was killed, Prosecutor Sally Blankenship said.
