(UPI) Five children, who climbed a fence to get into a. public swimming pool, drowned after they waded into the pool, apparently looking for frogs, police said. The children climbed a chainlink fence Sunday night and waded into some dirty water and apparently couldn't get out of the pool, police said. The pool was scheduled to open at the end of the month and had not been cleaned since last year.

Two teenage boys helping a parent of one of the victims search in Fisher Park in the Glen Park area of Gary saw a pair of shoes near the fence surrounding the pool. They climbed the seven-foot high fence and also found a row of shows along the dry shallow end of the pool before spotting the bodies in the deeper end. The 10-foot deep end contained about seven feet of rain water accumulated since the pool had been closed last fall. "I could see it myself where they had scratched the pool with their fingernails when they tried to get out, said Gary Detective William Burns. The victims were identified as Linda Britton, 13; Ossie Britton, 12; Edward Thigpen, 10; London Thigpen, and Jacqueline Sharp, 10.

Sharp was an aunt to the other four, authorities said. Burns said it appeared the children were looking for frogs in the Fisher Park Pool when they slipped in the deep end. "The kids were headed for the deep end and slipped and because it was so slimy they couldn't get back out," Burns said. Burns 'said a similar happened two years ago when two brothers who climbed the fence drowned in the pool. Tanker ignites after freight train derails PINE BLUFF, Ark.

(UPI) A chemical tanker of a derailed freight train exploded today and sent "giant fireball" 11,000 feet high, but caused no injuries at a site where 2,000 people were evacuated earlier, officials said. Gary Talley of the Arkansas Department of Emergency Services said the 7 a.m. explosions rocked a residential area in the southwestern part of the central Arkansas city. "We think was only one car," he said. "It shot flames 11,000 feet into the air." Talley said four of the tankers had been burning since about 20 cars of a Cotton Belt freight train jumped the track about 1:30 p.m.

Sunday. No one was injured, and the cause of the derailment was not immediately known. 'We had evacuated everyone within a mile radius of the site" before the explosion took place today," Talley said. He said about 2,000 people were moved from. their homes and taken to Watson Chapel High School.

"It was a giant fireball," he said. "We had restricted airspace over the site to 5,000 feet. It's a good thing no planes were in the Talley said firefighters were still standing clear of the fire because of the potential for more explosions. "This is a chemical train," he said. "It would take out anyone in the area" if it exploded.

"Because of the danger, you can't do Talley said that such explosions often "work in our favor" because they destroy any toxic fumes that might escape if the fire burned more slowly.
