Longtime political leader and town clerk-treasurer Genny Worsham said she knew DeVore for about 50 years. "I think he was just very community minded," Worsham said. "He was what I would call a good public servant." Rainey, a 1936 Whiteland High School graduate, also remembered DeVore as a young athlete.

DeVore was a member of the 1940 Greenwood Woodmen boys basketball team that beat Franklin in the sectional. It was the first time Greenwood accomplished the feat in 22 years. "There was quite a celebration in Greenwood," Rainey said. When not working at First Indiana Bank, where he retired in 1986 after having been vice presi dent for more than 20 years, DeVore devoted much of his time to the youth in the community. He taught Sunday school and was involved with Greenwood Little League.

"He was very adamant about young people," Avanell DeVore said. "He wanted them to always do the best that they could. He loved his sons and grandsons. They were the light of his life, too." No doubt Avanell held a special place in his heart, as well. The two were high school sweethearts.

"I went all through grade school, and I kind of liked him then," Avanell confessed. "We graduated in 1941. He went into the service in 1943. We were married 56 years; but I guess you'd say we were lovers 60 years. I've been one of the luckiest women ever.

I know he's in better hands now, but I'm going to miss him terribly." By Jennifer Jill Fowler daly journal staff writer jfow1erOttojoumalnet.com Neal DeVore had a passion for his community and the people in it. He was always interested in people and that the best things happen to everybody in Greenwood," said his bride of 56 years, Avanell DeVore. "That was his love." The lifelong Greenwood resi DaVORI dent died Friday at University Heights Convalescent Center. He was 76. "He was always interested in the city of Greenwood because he was born and raised here," Avanell DeVore said.

"Greenwood was always his main concern that it be the best place in the country. He loved it, and he loved everybody that lives here." DeVore described her husband as a leader, both in business and in politics. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. Later, back at home, he was the city's clerk-treasurer from 1976 to 1980 and ran unsuccessfully for mayor twice in the 1980s.

"I always thought people of Greenwood were short-changed by not having Neal as a mayor," said Harold Rainey, who first met DeVore in high school. "He couldn't stand half truths and evasive answers.
