Thirty years ago it was my pleasure to attend a Foreign Language Conference at Purdue University. This was shortly after the government involvement in the teaching of languages, mathematics and science a result of the Sputnik scare began.

The National Defense Educa-Act had assembled, a group of lectur- ers including college professors, linguists and high school teachers from around the country. Evelyn Seward was one of those persons chosen to represent a school corporation that had made strides in foreign language teaching. But Evelyn didn't limit her remarks to what the school corporation had accomplished in foreign language methodology. She was a growing ambassador for the Columbus Community School Corp. this was prior to consolidation with the conntyr She spoke warmly-about the attitude of the community towards education, architecture, and' community development in general.

Noblitt ParkPeople Trail under bridge Ideal access from north end of town, however, still no safe pedestrian crossing at 17th and Washington, and 'no access to People Trail from north side of Indiana 11 at bridge. I have spoken with Dave Hay-ward, Columbus ci engineer, with Qolumbus Parks and Recreation and with Community Development all of whom agreed, that something needed to be done. The difficulty with solving this problem, is that Lindsey Street is part of Indiana 46, and thus any work done, no matter how urgent must be coordinated through the State Highway' Department In addition, Indiana is currently trying to re-route Indiana 46, and mav also, be adding.

Specifically, I recommend the following changes to the three Mill Race entrances: Fifth Street Paint a cross walk across Lindsey Street, and add a stop lightwalk-don't walk light at the main Mill Race entrance.

Say no to landfill site From: Donald Wheeler Elizabethtown It makes no sense to drag industrial waste nnrl Pnliimhns trash to the southeastern edge of the county. It especially doesn't make sense to those of us who live in-Sandcreek TownshiD. close to the proposea bcneiat site. We're being dumped on literally. We irfoved to our section of the county to get away from such things.

We want a rural atmos-. phere, quiet It's a long way to work each day, but it's worth it to get away from congestion and noise. development We like it that way. Many of our neighbors have lived here for generations. 1 We take care of our land.

Now our political leaders are considering a 150-acre' landfill site in our neighborhood, down that road, for the whole, county's 'waste! Thanks to a gentleman From; Dan antt Kathy Ryan DeMotte On Saturday May 15, our daughter was involved in the Miss Indiana Pre-Teen ContestTield in Columbus.

The event started Friday evening and ended Sunday afternoon. On Saturday, our twin daughters were going to their senior nrom. Sunday, our sister-in-law was frantic to solve the problem. She contacted Burd's Cleaners ana although they were closed, the gentleman stayed to look atthe dress. It took some time for my sister-in-law to find his location and after inspecting the dress, the gentleman decided it needed to le dry cleaned. He remained at work untifthe dress was "cleaned and continually refused any payment for his work, noting that he had a daughter at that age, too. m)a ifnra ovtrpmplu jmnrpeeprt II IJI.I I.
