One of those disputed races resulted in a seat near the rear for Bailey, formerly mayor of Seymour. "The first day hasn't been disappointing yet at all," Bailey said after the session was adjourned. "It's been just as energetic as I thought it would be. I understand that it only gets better from here." Bailey beat Seymour Republican Dianne Cartmel for the seat abandoned by Democrat Baron Hill, who was defeated in his run this year for the U.S. Senate.

Cheatham, also a Democrat, said this session's Democratic majority will allow members of his party to play a different role than in the past. He said he may be in line for a committee chairmanship. In the last session he served on four committees, including County and Townships, Human Affairs and Natural Resources. His fourth committee, Ethics, will be combined with the Public Policy and Veterans' Affairs Committee. Cheatham handily defeated Madison attorney Donald Currie, Republican, to be returned to the statehouse.
